Postgraduate Workshop on Innovation and Commercialization

The INTERACT-Africa project recently organized a two-day workshop, May, 13th – 14th, 2025,  for postgraduate students and faculty under the theme “Bridging the Gap Between Research and Innovation for Commercialization.” The workshop aimed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to translate research into market-ready innovations.

The sessions emphasized innovation systems thinking, value chain analysis, and business models relevant to student-led innovations. Students were encouraged to read widely, including resources such as the OSLO Manual, to deepen their understanding of innovation levels and pathways from research to commercialization. Key barriers discussed included mindset, limited funding, and lack of focus or specialization.

A highlight of the workshop was a presentation by the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation, who provided valuable insights on the university’s research policies particularly concerning intellectual property (IP), patenting, and commercialization.

The workshop also featured interactive breakout sessions for both faculty and students, divided into three thematic groups: Information Technology, Biology and Chemistry.

Students presented their research topics within these groups and received targeted feedback from faculty members and peers. They were encouraged to engage their supervisors early in the research process and build upon previous student projects where applicable.

In addition to the academic sessions, a presentation on procurement and finance guided students on navigating university processes—covering how to request research equipment, access project funding, and support the commercialization of their innovations.

The workshop concluded with a clear way forward, encouraging students to actively seek industry linkages and explore partnerships with institutions such as KIRDI, following established guidelines and policies.
